2016 Presidential Debates on RokuSling TV continues to improve and expand its cord-cutting service with the addition of a cloud DVR program. Sling is rolling out a beta version of the cloud DVR to Roku streaming media players and Roku TVs. The service will initially be available only to selected users who ask to be included by providing their Sling account email address at www.sling.com/dvr.

According to the Sling TV announcement, the following benefits will be part of the initial DVR launch:

  • Availability across all Roku devices under both Sling Orange and Sling Blue.
  • Record movies, episodes, and full series (DVR functionality will not be available on all channels). Pause, rewind and fast-forward recorded content.
  • Record multiple programs simultaneously with no recording conflicts.
  • DVR content will be shown on your "My TV" screen for quick and easy access.
  • Automated space management will delete the oldest 'watched' recording when capacity is full to allow space for new recordings.

Sling TV added that customers selected for the beta program will receive 100 hours of cloud DVR storage at no charge, and the ability to upgrade cloud DVR storage is being worked on. There is no word on whether the cloud DVR service will be free after the beta period, but this indicates that Sling intends to turn the service into a new revenue stream, at least through the sale of additional storage space.

Sling TV is targeting the competition with this service, as they announced that their cloud DVR would have no 28-day restriction on how long shows can be saved, which is a limitation with PlayStation Vue. The announcement also comes on the same day that AT&T is set to announce their DirecTV Now streaming television service. Hulu will also be joining the mix with the addition of a live TV streaming service in 2017.
