Educational Channels on RokuIt's hard to believe, but summer vacation is winding down and the beginning of school is just around the corner - and for some, it's started already. With that in mind, we thought it a good idea to highlight some educational channels to help your little (or not so little) student get back into the swing of things.

The good thing about most these channels, the kids can be watching television and not even realize they are actually learning.

A majority of the channels we have chosen have educational content ranging from Pre-K through middle school. A variety of subjects are covered: shapes, colors, counting and songs for the younger student and math, spelling, science and geography for the older students.

If you're homeschooling your children, check out Homeschooling Network. This channel offers a library of videos featuring episodes of Homeschool Highways, a series that travels from city to city interviewing and meeting with homeschoolers. The channel also includes educational tutorials that are a sampling of other content available if you subscribe to the program.

Kids Camp is a channel primarily geared towards the pre-K- and kindergarten-age students. Here you will find many animated videos that cover a variety of topics. Some of the categories include Shapes and Colors, Phonics, Alphabet, Capital and Small letters, Sing-A-Longs, and Nursery Rhymes. The videos are all relatively short, from 1 - 3 minutes each, with the exception of some of the song compilations. There are commercials but the videos run in a sequence once you start.

HooplaKidz Rhymes is designed for a slightly older student while still maintaining plenty of content for the pre-K/kindergarteners. Here you will find similar content, Sing-A-Longs, Shapes, Colors, Rhymes and so forth. You will also find content geared for an older student like Basic Spelling and Math, Science Projects at Home, Simple Recipes, Drawing, and at Home Craft Projects.

Nellie & Ned is a bit of a transition channel with most content relating to Pre-K through First Grade age group, but also possessing content for the older student. Here you can expect to find videos about Colors, Shapes, Numbers, and the Alphabet for the younger students and Spelling and Word Definitions for the older students.

Mocomi is a channel newly released in the Roku channel store. The channel caters to a slightly older student, yet still maintains plenty of content for the younger kids. The categories are broken up according to Grade and Content. Category titles include Biology, Chemistry, Nature, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades, History, Space, Animals, Geography, Physics and Drawing. Many of the videos feature interactive fun experiments and projects you can do at home.

edewcate is a channel geared more towards the Elementary/Middle School aged student. There is educational content for the younger students like Rhymes, Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies; however, it is very limited. Here you will find a variety of interesting videos including:
Elementary Level Math, Science Geography, Middle School Chemistry, Physics, Life Science, Math, Geography, High School Business Math, Chemistry, Physics, and Life Science. Additional videos include Amazing facts for Teens, High School Experiments, Multiplication Songs and Drawing.

Kaplan College Prep offers limited yet useful information for those who want an overview of how to approach the various parts of the SAT, ACT, and PSAT exams. The Kaplan Roku channel provides several short videos giving tips on taking the college entrance exams. Math, Science, Reading, and Writing Categories cover topics such as how to write an essay and how to solve a logarithm.

We hope this information is helpful in getting the kids back into the mindset that school is approaching and the days of playing all day are slowly coming to a halt.
