Odysee is a YouTube-like video sharing service built by the creators of LBRY (pronounced "library"), a blockchain network billed as "an open, free, and fair network for digital content." But unlike YouTube, "there are no moderators, and no safety filters for younger viewers," according to ZDnet. More information on using Odysee can be found on the Odysee FAQ page.
Most videos on Odysee are free to watch, although creators can set a price (measured in "library credits" or LBCs) and viewers can tip creators in LBCs if they so choose, although this option is not available through the Roku app. The Roku app mostly mimics the Odysse website with videos in these categories: Lifestyle, Wild West, Education, Featured, Music, Artists, Finance 2.0, Gaming, Tech, News & Politics, Pop Culture, and Explore.
This version of Odysee on Roku is a near mirror-image of the Odysee Unofficial app that has been available on Roku for the last year. This version adds a "Following" category that, in theory, allows you to link the Roku app to your Odysee account so that the creators you follow will show up here. However, this feature was broken at the time of our review. The app directed us to enter an activation code on the Odysee website; after doing so, the Roku app display the error "unable to parse/get preferences" and crash instead of syncing. Deleting and reinstalling the app returned it to working condition, but with a new prompt to enter an activation code to sync. After several unsuccessful rounds of this, we gave up on trying to connect the "official" Odysee Roku app to an Odysee account.
