This Week on Roku - May 4, 2014

May 4, 2014 - 22:10 -- RokuGuide

Twenty-six channels were launched in the Roku Channel Store last week. Here is a look at just a few of them.

The Young Turks - The Young Turks was previously available on Roku as the TYT Network, but has relaunched with a new name and three additional shows. The Young Turks is described as a "liberal/progressive political and social commentary program" and bills itself as the largest online news show in the world. In addition to the flagship news and commentary program, you'll find recent episodes of 7 other TYT shows.

cdsavoia - cdsavoia is a collection of short films that hopes to inspire people to take more interest in the arts. The channel offers videos in the categories of Fine Art, Music, Design, Wine, and Fashion.

CelebTV - The Roku has no shortage of celebrity news and gossip channels, and here's one more. CelebTV offers short clips in several categories, including Family, Music, Sports, Teen, and Latino. The clips last about a minute each and cover what are described as the "important facts of the story."

Perfect 1080 - If you prefer looking at beautiful people over hearing about them, Perfect 1080 will let you do that. This channel provides a slideshow of models in the style of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition , set to the sounds of techno dance music

Bubble Wrap - If you find Angry Birds to be too challenging, Bubble Wrap might be more your speed. There is no timer and no score keeping. Just you and a screenful of bubbles to pop on a lonesome Saturday night.

Local News - Several local news stations have also been add, bringing news and weather to residents of nine cities and geographic areas. For each local station you can watch clips from recent news broadcasts, check the 7-day forecast, and view current weather maps and satellite images.

Other new channels that launched as week included:

  • Classic Live Action Kids TV, which features retro kids' TV shows
  • Pathogen 2, an updated version of the arcade-style game where you fight germs, and save the patient
  • R-Cast, an app that lets you cast online videos from your Android device to Roku
  • WalterBiscardi dot Com, offering advice, inspiration & training in the creative industry

And, finally, you will also find a half dozen channels that offer live and on-demand services from local churches.
