Vimeo adds new features to Roku channel

Vimeo adds new features to Roku channelVimeo, the popular video-sharing website, has updated it's Roku channel with new features, including the addition of in-channel purchases and rentals of more than 30,000 films and series directly from their creators.

Vimeo On Demand is a service that allows creators to distribute their videos worldwide directly through Vimeo. The Vimeo On Demand library was previously unavailable on Roku. Now, you can purchase and rent these videos while browsing the channel on your Roku device. (You will still need to add a credit card through the Vimeo website, though). If you aren't familiar with Vimeo On Demand, you'll find high-quality original films and series. Videos in the Roku channel are categorized in the usual genres like Action, Comedy, Documentary, and Horror. You'll also find "New & Noteworthy" and "Staff Recommendations." Visit the discover page of the Vimeo website and you can also browse 99-cent rentals and over two dozen "collections" such as Winter Action Sports, Stand Up for Comedy!, New Indie Horror, Indiegogo Crowdfunded Films, and Vimeo Originals.

In addition to being able to access Vimeo On Demand, the new Vimeo Roku channel includes the following updates:

  • Unlock your account using an activation code through a web browser on your computer or mobile device. You no longer have to suffer through entering your email address and password with the on-screen keyboard. Log into the Vimeo website, go to www.vimeo.com/activate
  • to enter the activation code shown on the Roku channel, and you're connected!

  • Adaptive bitrate streaming (HLS) is now supported, so the quality of the video stream adjusts in real time based on your available Internet download speed. This should reduce or eliminate rebuffering on slower Internet connections.
  • Vimeo has also added support for Roku 4.
