June 19, 2014 - 21:19 -- RokuGuide

Roku Surfing Channels For most people, June 20, 2014, means Friday, week's over, happy hours... But to an estimated 23 million people world-wide it is International Surfing Day. This year marks the 10th annual ISD celebration, with 140 events planned in 30 different countries to celebrate "10 years of Stoke". International Surfing Day is the work of the Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. So, with that in mind we are going to do a salute to the day and highlight some of the premier surfing and surfing-related channels that Roku has to offer. ENJOY INTERNATIONAL SURFING DAY... MAHALO!

The surf industry has grown immensely over the years and generates an estimated $7.29 billion annually, not bad for a bunch of beach bums. Here are some interesting surf facts that you may find surprising:

  • The average surfer is 34, owns 4 boards and makes $75K/year.
  • The average surfer drives 10 miles to surf and spends $40 per session.
  • U.S. Surfers spend 3.1Billion on local surf trips each year

With those demographics, it's no wonder surfing-related channels are popping up all over the Roku Channel Store. We'd all rather surf the waves than surf the TV, but if you can't get out into the water, here are our recommendations for surfing videos on Roku.
