The Prisoner

Quick Look: The Prisoner was a short-lived British TV drama series that first aired in the US in 1968. The 17-episode series' story line revolves around a recently retired agent, referred to as "Number Six," who is captured and sentenced to life in a bizarre prison camp designed to look like a quaint European village. During his captivity he is continuously hounded and interrogated for information, resulting in his tireless effort to escape.

Although it lasted only one season, the show has something of a cult following and has been described as "the best show of 1967." The 17 episodes are also described as "weird, wild, druggy, trippy, clever, sorrowful, goofy, gorgeous." A book has even been published about the show; in I Am (Not) a Number: Decoding The Prisoner, author Alex Cox "provides an entirely original and controversial 'explanation' for what is perhaps the best, and certainly the most perplexing, TV series of all time."

The first episode of the The Prisoner can be seen below.
