Freecast is the latest entry in the Free Ad-Supported Television (FAST) market, with over 500 linear (aka, live) channels of news sports, movies, and more. The free streaming service is similar to Pluto TV and The Roku Channel. The following list provides examples of the available content.
- News - Local Now, Yahoo Finance, OAN Live, CBN News, Euronews, and more
- Sports - Stadium, TNA Wrestling, World Poker Tour, Fight Network, and more
- TV - Curiosity Now, AXS TV NOW, Nosey, BUZZR, Law & Crime, and more
- Movies - iNDIEFLIX, CrimeFlix, Horror Machine, A-Z Black Cinema, and more
- Lifestyle - Gusto TV, CraftsyTV, OZ TV, Hollywood, and more
- Kids - Toon Goggles, Xploration Station, Youth Success Network, and more
The remaining channel categories on Freecast are Gaming, Shopping, Mis Canales, Spiritual, Blk, International, and Music.
As stated above, all of these channels are free, but unlike other FAST apps on Roku you are required to log in with a free account, which can be created here. You will also have the option to upgrade to a paid account that promises local over-the-air (OTA) channels (availability varies by location), over 50 additional streaming channels, DVR capabilities, and movies on demand. However, pricing is not transparent, and it's not immediately obvious that the OTA channels are just that - over the air. To proceed with buying a paid package you have to purchase an antenna or streaming box (or pay for shipping on a small set-top antenna), and must be able to receive local broadcasts with the antenna. The local channels are not available through your Internet connection, so you're out of luck if you live in an area with poor reception.
Freecast offers a nice addition to the FAST arena, but you'll find more content (and better-known brands) on Pluto TV and The Roku Channel. And those services don't require you to provide personal information to use their apps. Also, unless Freecast becomes more transparent with their pricing, we cannot recommend subscribing to a paid package.
