When Roku released their newest operating system, Roku OS 9.2, earlier this year, they introduced a new feature to U.S. users called Roku Zones. Zones are collections of curated content related to specifc genres and topics. When a user searches on a supported genre or topic on a Roku device, the search results will consist of relevant content from numerous Roku channels, arranged in browsable rows that may include free titles, new releases, and other categories.
To help you find Christmas holiday entertainment, Roku has created a zone that lists movies and TV episodes from several Roku channels. To find the Holiday Zone, you will need to select the Search option from your Roku's home screen menu, search on "Holiday," and select Holiday Zone from the results.
Roku's Holiday Zone currently includes the categories and content listed below, but Roku updates zones, so new content may became available. Be aware that much of the content requires a rental or purchase fee, or a subscription to a streaming video service. When you select a video title, you'll be presented with a list of viewing options.
Content Available on the Roku Holiday Zone
- Free Holiday Movies - A half-dozen feature-length films available for free through VUDU or Tubi. Titles include Ernest Saves Christmas (1988), A Princess for Christmas (2011), and A Christmas to Remember (2016). Oddly, no movies from The Roku Channel are listed, even though you'll find a few holiday selections there.
- Best Holiday TV Episodes - A dozen holiday-themed episodes from TV shows such as The Wonder Years, Friends, The Brady Bunch, Seinfeld, and The Simpsons.
- Family Favorites - Fifteen popular films and TV specials, including Elf (2003), The Polar Express (2004), A Charlie Brown Christmas, and A Christmas Story (1983).
- Holiday Romance - Eight romantic holiday titles, including The Most Wonderful Time of the Year (2008), A Christmas Kiss (2011), and Once Upon a Christmas Miracle (2018).
- Holiday Classics - Eight titles that include It's A Wonderful Life (1946), White Christmas (1954), and Scrooged (1988).
- Animated - Eight animated films and TV specials, including Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July (1980) and Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas (2009).
- For Grown Ups - Ten films, though not necessarily holiday-oriented - how did Die Hard (1988) get included? Buy you will also find National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989), Tyler Perry's A Madea Christams (2013), and Christmas With the Kranks (2004).
