The Other, Original Wizard of Oz

November 28, 2010 - 21:43 -- RokuGuide

We are all familiar with the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz. In fact, TBS is winding down a Thanksgiving holiday weekend with daily replays of Judy Garland and her munchkin friends. But there's an even earlier version of this wonderful movie, and it's new this week on the Pub-D-Hub channel on your Roku player.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was released in 1910 as an all-black-and-white silent film. Only 13 minutes in duration, the movie features some of your favorite characters, including Dorothy, Aunt Em, Scarecrow, and Glinda the Good. However, the plot takes a different tack than the newer and better-known classic. The movie starts with Hank the Mule, who wasn't cast in the 1939 version, but the cyclone still transports Dorothy, and Toto to the Land of Oz, where the Munchkins bear a strange resemblance to Rockettes.

If you're a Wizard of Oz fan, make sure you visit Pub-D-Hub to watch this bit of film history. There is no charge for viewing Pub-D-Hub content. More information on this film is available at IMDB.com.

If you want to watch the 1939 Judy Garland legend, you can buy or rent The Wizard of Oz from Amazon Video on Demand for viewing on your Roku player.
