PEG.TV on Roku

Quick Look: PEG.TV is local public access and government channels. Does that lead you to expect school board meetings, county council sessions, and city notices of street sweeping schedules? If so, then you won't be disappointed. These are the cable channels that broadcast your local elected officials voting on rezoning petitions and debating whether to approve a contract extension with the city's ink toner supplier. PEG.TV takes you from the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen in Massachusetts to public service announcements in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

But it's not all government proceedings. There are some unpolished gems to be found by the dedicated Roku channel surfer. Okay, calling them gems may be a little generous, but there's something oddly appealing about watching the coconut festival cooking demonstrations and episodes of Unko Funki Clubhouse on Ho'ike: Kauai Community TV from Lihu, Hawaii. Remember, though, this is public access - sound quality, production techniques, and content are all what you would expect from that.

Content is broken down into Public Access, Education, and Government, with additional categories for Most Popular and Featured. Despite the hype in the developer's description, there aren't a lot of cities to choose from, so it's unlikely that many of you will find content local to you or your family and friends. There are only eight government channels: Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; Woodbridge, NJ; South Portland, ME; Cleveland, OH; Shrewsbury, MA; Bristol, PA; Louisville, KY; and Montclair, NJ.

The 23 education channels and 24 public access channels show the same heavy concentration of cities in the Northeast. If this sort of local content interests you, then visit the PEG.TV channel and see if your city is covered. If not, it's probably not worth digging through the channel to find those unpolished gems - unless you want to see a coconut festival cooking demonstration.
