Quick Look: A good number of apps get deleted from my Roku after I've reviewed them for RokuGuide. But Aquarium Screensaver has made the cut and remains as the current screensaver on one of my Rokus.
Most of the Aquarium Screensaver screen shows a reef with brightly-colored corals and sponges. Swimming in front of and above the reef are numerous marine fish. The thing I like most about Aquarium Screensaver is the high-quality graphics. I expected very simple graphics lacking in detail, like you find on Spongebob Squarepants cartoons. However, the colors are drawings are fairly detailed and the colors are very vivid. The fish are also true-to-life and you can turn on an option that gives you both the common name and scientific name of each new fish as it appears (for example, Fingerprint Toby, Canthigaster compressa).
If you prefer a more-impressionistic reef, you can switch to the oil painting version, but I prefer the detail in the basic version. Two add-ons are currently available for 99 cents each. One gives you additional artistic styles, such as watercolor and classic comics, and the other adds additional fish. Other options in Aquarium Screensaver allow you to show the time in one corner and current local weather (temperature and an icon for cloud cover) based on zip code in another corner.
I'll admit that I'm a bit biased toward this screensaver as I have a 90-gallon reef tank in my living room - a real one with live coral, fish, an anemone, and a starfish. Aquarium Screensaver isn't that realistic, but neither does it require me to spend hours fighting algae and carrying five-gallon buckets of saltwater through the house. And at only two bucks, it's orders of magnitude cheaper!
NOTE: Screensavers do not work like regular channels. They must be activated from the Settings menu. See this article for more details on setting up a screensaver on your Roku.
