This Roku app's name, Hanafuda, refers to a style of Japanese playing cards. The actual game on this app is Koi-Koi, which is played with hanafuda cards. According to Wikipedia: "The object of the game is to form special card combinations (or sets) called yaku from cards accumulated in a point pile. Players can gain cards in their point piles by matching cards in their hands, or drawn from the draw pile, with cards on the table. Once a yaku has been made, a player can stop to cash in points, or keep going (referred to as "koi-koi", hence the name of the game) to form additional yaku for more points. The point values assigned to individual cards have no effect on the score, but they are helpful to judge their value in forming yaku."
To play Koi-Koi on the Hanafuda app, use the following buttons on your Roku remote:
- Left/Right/Up/Down - Move the cursor
- Replay - Clue with yaku and cards
- OK - Select a choice
The app lets you play only against the machine. The game ends when one player, you or the machine, scores a total of 50 or more points or after 12 rounds of play.
Oddly, the game uses only a portion of the TV screen, and what appears to be a video ad is displayed in one corner throughout gameplay, although it is so small that it is hard to see what is being advertised. See screenshots below.
