Feet Face Forward Yoga

Quick Look: On the surface, the Feet Face Forward Yoga channel on Roku may seem to have little to do with the practice of yoga. The videos certainly bear little resemblance to those on the many other Roku yoga channels. However, Colin Wolpert, the host and teacher of Feet Face Forward Yoga, explained to RokuGuide that "the channel is specifically created to bring awareness that the physical practice of yoga is only one small aspect of yoga, and albeit important, one of the least important."

The following explanation from Wolpert provides more explanation of this channel:

Most people assume that yoga is only the physical practice that takes place in studios, but this is not the case at all. The impetus of yoga in studios is the physical practice (ASANA) as a means to be able to consider all the other aspects, which comprise the whole picture of yoga.

There are eight limbs to yoga (only one of which is the physical, ASANA) and within these, an additional ten aspects of YAMAS and NIYAMAS.

Your Feet Face Forward Yoga channel on Roku specifically addresses the philosophical limbs of yoga by weaving these into modern, short inspirational self-help videos. Each video brings out a unique aspect of yoga, which is the core of the practice represented by the YAMAS and NIYAMAS.

1. Yama

The first limb, yama, deals with one’s ethical standards and sense of integrity, focusing on our behavior and how we conduct ourselves in life. Yamas are universal practices that relate best to what we know as the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

The five yamas are:
Ahimsa - nonviolence
Satya - truthfulness
Asteya - nonstealing
Brahmacharya - continence
Aparigraha - noncovetousness

2. Niyama

Niyama, the second limb, has to do with self-discipline and spiritual observances, developing your own personal meditation practices, or making a habit of taking contemplative walks alone are all examples of niyamas in practice.

The five niyamas are:
Saucha - cleanliness
Samtosa - contentment
Tapas - heat; spiritual austerities
Svadhyaya - study of one's self
Isvara pranidhana - surrender
