Quick Look: CheckingHome2 is an app that displays the current date and time on your Roku along with a personalized greeting and up to three reminders that can be programmed to appear at any time and for any duration that you choose (see screenshot below).
Although you may question why you need to add reminders to your Roku, the app's website suggest the practicality of using this app in elder-care and other settings: "Put a small TV with the CheckingHome channel in your parents home, or care facility. Post reminders from your computer or phone to remind them of important events. Not just birthdays or anniversaries, but things like '9:00 am - Take your pills', or 'Tuesday - Today is trash day'. Or use the same information in an active household. You don't have to be older to take advantage of this channel." Other uses are identified for small businesses: "In a small business, put one in your lobby, in your break room, in the locker room, hallway, everywhere! Add all your employees birthdays as annual events, they will automatically appear each day. Set reminders for weekly timecards, reminders for open enrollment."
It should be noted that this app is not a screensaver. It does not automatically start when your Roku is idle, but must be launched like any other Roku channel. Also, the display is static once launched, so it shouldn't be used on a TV where you're concerned about image burn-in.
To get started, add the channel and follow the on-screen prompts. You will be directed to go to checkinghome.com and create a free account. You can then personalize the settings with a one-line greeting and create your list of reminders which can be displayed one time, daily, weekly , bi-weekly, monthly or annually. You can then further customize the settings when you set up the reminder date, day to start, run times, choose your display days and priority. All for these steps are done on their website through your account. When it comes time to change the message you can log into your account and modify the messages and reminders as well as the greeting. After making any changes, don't forget to click the "publish" button on the website and then relaunch the channel to see your changes.
The free version does have its limitations: You can only use it on only one Roku and you can have only three reminders at a time. The paid upgradeallows you to run the app on more than one Roku and create more than three reminders. This channel can also be used in conjunction with the AutoLaunch Roku app.
