Plex for Roku

Quick Look: Plex offers another option for delivering videos, photos, and music from your computer to your TV via Roku. Plex also offers a means of watching YouTube videos on your TV, although you will have to find and queue those videos from your computer. And the nice thing about all of this is that I found it incredibly easy to setup and use. Here's a quick summary of how this works.

First, you'll need to download the Plex Media Server and install it on your computer. It's free and you'll find it here. The media server gives you access to the videos, music, and photos on your computer.

Next, set up a MyPlex account here and sign in. This will allow to, among other things, add Internet video (yes, including YouTube videos) to your queue for streaming to your Roku. MyPlex includes a handy little app, a "Plex It" button that you can drag to your Internet browser's bookmark toolbar. Pull up a video on YouTube or another website, then click the Plex It! link on your toolbar. That video will be added to your MyPlex queue.

Finally, go to the Plex channel on your Roku and follow the instructions for linking your Roku to your Plex server, then log into your MyPlex account from within the Plex Roku channel. If all of that worked, you'll find your computer's media content and the Internet videos available from within the Plex Roku channel.

Sure, there are a lot of variables at play, such as the speed of your computer for delivering the files, file formats, the speed of your Internet connect, the stability of your wireless connection, and so on. I also found that it took quite some time for Plex to catalog all of my files and make them available to the Roku, so there may a gratification delay. However, I was just able to watch three YouTube videos on my TV that I queued up last night. The video quality was excellent and there were no buffering issues.

True, I wasn't able to kick back on the couch and browse for new videos, but in just a few minutes I can line up a whole host of Internet videos for later television viewing.
