RokuGuide Review: The Epix channel will likely be of interest only to those who already subscribe to Epix through their cable or satellite television provider. Currently (July 2011), Epix is available from Charter, Cox Communications, DISH Network, Mediacom, Verizon FiOS, and several Insight and NCTC subscribers. Check for updates to this list on the Epix FAQ page. Pricing varies by provider.
If you're an Epix subscriber through your television provider, you can watch movies on the Roku channel at no additional charge. So why would you want to watch on the Roku if you already get the channel by satellite or cable? Well, Epix on Roku allows you to watch the movies where you don't have a cable or satellite box. You can take your Roku with you when you travel. As long as you're able to connect your Roku via WiFi (or Ethernet if you have a Roku with an Ethernet port), you can watch movies from the Epix channel. (Note that connecting via hotel Internet can be troublesome, as the Roku does not support entering a username and password via Web browser, which is required by many hotels.) I've read in a number of posts that Epix offers very little that is not already available on Netflix. That may be true, but those who already have Epix as part of their cable or satellite bundle may not subscribe to Netflix on top of that.
Epix offers a free 14-day trial. No credit card is required, and you won't be billed by your cable or satellite provider at the end of the trial. If Epix is available through your TV provider, this will allow you to see what movies are available. If Epix is not available through your TV provider, then the only reason to add this channel is to get a couple of free weeks of movie viewing. However, if you're already a Netflix or Amazon Prime subscriber, you already have access to most of the Epix content.
NOTE: To subscribe, select a movie on the Roku channel and press the play button on your remote. A code will be displayed that you then enter at www.epixhd.com/roku. Before entering the code, you must create an account and be signed into that account. After creating your account, you must return to www.epixhd.com/roku to enter the code.
