Dead Gunner is a 2D single-shooter arcade game in which you move through maze-like worlds while shooting enemies and avoiding fire. You traverse different levels of each world by climbing up and down ladders and jumping over obstacles. Although there are other remakes of this game online, this Roku version has limited controls: move left and right with the corresponding directional buttons on your remote, jump up or climb up a ladder with the up button, climb down a ladder with the down button, and fire your gun with the OK button. (To jump onto or over an obstacle, press [UP] and the immediately press [LEFT] or [RIGHT].) The play/pause button brings up game options.
At the start of a game you will be asked to provide a name, which doesn't have to be your own name or handle. Rather, the name is used to identify saved games so you can reload them later on and continue playing. You can also select Tourist or Action. Tourist is not a game, though; rather, it just lets you walk around a park with no threats.
