RokuGuide Review: Amazon Instant Video offers a mix of payment options for their streaming video service, which serves up both movies and TV shows. Amazon Prime subscribers have unlimited access to thousands of videos as part of their Amazon Prime membership(which also includes free shipping on much of Amazon's physical merchandise), and can rent or purchase thousands more. Non-subscribers can rent or purchase movies and TV shows from the entire library, including the titles that are free to Prime subscribers.
If you haven't used Amazon Instant Video lately, you might be interested to learn that Amazon has added a Netflix-style video queue, the lack of which was the biggest complaint about this channel. Called Your Watchlist, users can browse video titles and add them to the watchlist for later viewing. Non-Prime subscribers and Prime subscribers selecting non-Prime videos can put titles into their watchlist without renting or purchasing until they're ready to watch.
Amazon Instant Video has some nice browsing capabilities. From the main menu, you can search, select only Prime videos, browse all movies, or browse all TV shows. The main menu also provides access to personal recommendations and to special deals, which includes movies under $3 and TV seasons under $5. The Prime video selection shows you only those videos that are included in the Prime membership and divides those videos into top movies, top TV, recently added movies, recently added TV, movie genres, and TV genres.
The main menu Movie and TV selections will take you to similar categories for each, but TV has a useful category called Your Next Episodes that takes you directly to the next episode in each TV series that you've watched. This is a huge improvement; in the past, users had to hunt for the season they were watching, and then remember which was the last episode watched. TV videos are also categorized by channel for those who want to browse through, for example, all shows from Discovery Channel, AMC, or Bravo. There are shows available from 21 channels.
