RokuGuide Quick Look: UrbanPix, whose tagline is Black Entertainment Media on Demand, claims to have "one of the world's largest libraries of independent urban feature films, short films, web series, documentaries, & media content." This library, as offered on the UrbanPix Roku channel, consist of 58 videos in the categories of Drama, Comedy, Family, Music Biographies, and Documentaries.
Titles include an eclectic mix of content, including a 48-minute workout video and a 45-minute collection of hopping lowrider videos that is available on the DailyMotion website. There are 10 full-length feature films in the Drama category. Music Biographies is the largest video category, with 27 titles; featured artists include Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Lisa Left Eye Lopes, Jay-Z, and Janet Jackson.
All of the above content is grouped under Feature Films. There are placeholders for Short Films and Webisodes, but clicking on those will give you a "content coming soon" notice.
All Roku users can browse video titles and descriptions. However, there are no freebies or previews and if you try to play a video you will be asked to visit the UrbanPix website (see link below) to subscribe. UrbanPix accepts credit cards, but only if you have a PayPal account (you will be given the opportunity to open one if you don't have one already). This is unusual in that many online merchants now allow you to pay with a credit card through PayPal even if you don't have a PayPal account. The signup page says you get 14 days free, followed by a monthly fee, but there is no information on whether you can cancel within the 14-day window with no charge.
