Positive Peak Radio & TV

Positive Peak Radio & TVQuick Look: While the masses are watching the latest content from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Crackle and Amazon Instant Video (all excellent channels that I visit often), I like to search for hidden gems of programming on lesser-known Roku channels. With the number of Roku channels nearing 300, there are plenty of gems out there. On the music front, one Roku channel that I particularly enjoy is Positive Peak Radio & TV, which airs four music stations in addition to psychic talk radio.

Positive Peak's flagship station is A1R - The Ask 1 Radio Network. A1R is psychic talk radio, where psychics take calls during live shows every Monday through Thursday evening starting at 8:00 pm Eastern. But the music stations are the reason I have Positive Peak in my channel lineup. Being a country music fan, my favorite is iCountry 1700, billed as "Carolina Country". iCountry 1700 plays modern country from top artists such as George Strait, Brad Paisley, Lady Antebellum, and Sugarland.

Another Positive Peak station that I enjoy is Surfside 1640, which is advertised to play hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. When I first tuned into this station I expected surf music - The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean. Instead, I found a mix of pop, rock, disco, and easy listening that includes Bruce Springsteen and Prince, along with a number of artists that I didn't recognize.

The Animal is a classic rock station. Although I like classic rock, I've failed in my duties as a reviewer because I've sampled this station only a couple of times, not enough to give an opinion on the music or artist lineups.

Abigail Radio, "Always Soft... Always Sweet" plays soft adult contemporary music. This isn't my thing, so you'll have to rely on the station's own description on its website: "the best of the 70's through today... songs that send you back to a romantic moment or a touching interlude. Striking and full of contradictions, our music will surprise you, enlighten you and send you into a daydream."

Someone has to pay the bills for these music stations, so you'll be subjected to occasional advertisements between songs. As stated above, Positive Peak's flagship station is psychic talk, and you'll hear ads for psychic services on these sister stations. The ads don't bother me, though some may find the announcer's pushy voice to be too reminiscent of late-night infomercials.

One nice touch is that the stations rotate high-resolution photos in a slideshow, adding some visual interest if your Roku is setup so that you have to leave the TV turned on to hear the sound.

There are some quirks to this station, but they won't affect your listening experience. The above links to the individual stations comes from the Positive Peaks website, but not all of them work. I added them in case the websites are temporarily down, in which case they may be accessible when you click on them. Also, I'm not sure what to make of the channel description in the Roku Channel Store (see Developer's Channel Description below). I don't know what a "video radio station" is, I doubt that these are any of America's most-listened to radio stations (although I will be happy to correct that statement if I'm provided with proof showing otherwise), and there are only five radio stations, not six - unless you count the A1R twice. A1R is listed twice - one is shown to play a live stream when psychics are on the air, and the other airs reruns. And finally, I'm not sure I would classify any of these stations as "tomorrow's radio", but I'll write that off as marketing hype.
