Roku refreshes its media player lineupRoku this week announced that their latest firmware, OS 8, will begin rolling out to Roku players early this month and to Roku TVs in November. Highlights of OS 8 include integration of over-the-air broadcast TV with streaming content on Roku TVs, enhanced search and voice control, TV Everywhere single sign-on to eliminate having to enter login credentials multiple times, and an updated 4K Spotlight Channel.

Roku refreshes its media player lineup

Roku announced updates to its streaming media players this week. The Fall 2017 models offer faster processors and other enhancements, while two models were dropped from the lineup. Some models have advanced remotes that will now operate the power and sound volume on compatible TV sets.

Hulu's Roku channel updated with new user interface and support for Live TVHulu's live TV service is finally available in the Roku Channel Store, along with the new user interface that's been marketed as "the new Hulu experience." After a trial run as a private (non-certified) beta channel, Hulu's certified channel in the Roku Channel Store has been updated for the Roku Ultra, Roku Premiere+, Roku Premiere, Roku Express, Roku Express+, Roku Streaming Stick (3600), Roku 4, Roku 3 and Roku TVs.

200 Essential Movies to Watch Now on your RokuFandangoNOW, Roku's embedded on-demand streaming movie and TV service, has issued a challenge to film buffs to bring attention to classics and relevant new films that are available on any streaming device. The challenge is called "Rotten Tomatoes' 200 Essential Movies to Watch Now" and consists of films hand-picked by Rotten Tomatoes editors from "Certified Fresh" titles (scoring 75% and above on the Tomatometer).

Redbox tests streaming video service with Redbox On Demand channel on RokuRedbox, which rents DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and videos games from the familiar bright red kiosks, exited the streaming video business when they shut down their Redbox Instant by Verizon service in 2014. But that story apparently isn't over yet, as Redbox is testing a new invitation-only service called Redbox On Demand.
