SlingPlayer for Roku

SlingPlayer for Roku Quick Look: SlingPlayer for Roku gives SlingBox owners another option for viewing live and recorded TV programming. Not familiar with SlingBox? Here's how it works: First, you must purchase a SlingBox and connect it to your DVR, digital cable set-top box, satellite receiver, DVD player, digital tuner for over-the-air broadcasts (note that some SlingBox models include a tuner), or other audio-visual source. Next, you'll need to configure your SlingBox to work with your home network (high-speed Internet connection required). Now, anything on your AV device, including your DVR recordings and live TV programming, can be viewed on a remote computer or on a mobile device running the SlingPlayer app. For Roku owners, the content from your SlingBox-connected AV source is also available when you log into the SlingPlayer for Roku channel.

The usual question for services such as this is "Why do I need this if I'm already paying for cable or satellite service?" The answer: with a SlingBox, you need to have a set top box (or OTA antennae) in only one location, but you can watch programming at a different location. Connect a Roku to that basement TV that has no cable box and you can stream programming to it. Have a vacation home with a TV, but don't want to pay for cable or satellite service year round? Take your Roku with you and "sling" programming from your main house to your vacation spot. And with the iPad and Android apps, you can also watch your favorite programs while away from any TV.

To sling programs to your Roku, though, you will need to have your iPad or Android app functioning and on the same WiFi network as your Roku. With Roku, the programming goes through the iPad or Android app to the Roku - it doesn't come through the Roku's Internet connection. The mobile app also functions as a remote control for the Roku SlingPlayer app.
